Everyone has the thought that something in their life needs to change.
We reach a “decision point” in our life where we think we need “change”.
If you’ve reached that point that you realize that the path you are on is leading somewhere you don’t want to go, this may help you.
If you don’t, it appears you are perfect and have no need to read further. Click the cute red “X” in the upper right (or left if your a Mac addict) and continue on with your day.
However, if you are like me (and the rest of us) something inside tells you that you need to change “something” in your life.
Whether it be:
- Relationships
- Careers
- Weight
- Smoking
- Lifestyle
- Family
- Spirituality
There are lots of things that people want to change about their life.
For Me
Back in 2007 I had an epiphany. I was tired of being fat.
A year later I was tired of being a smoker.
Once “the pain of being fat” got worse than the “pain of change” I made the “decision”.
Then I applied “action” to that decision. That’s when “change” took life.
Where It All Starts
My study of my life has led me to a few conclusions.
One of them is this.
“Everything starts with a thought“.
Then that thought turns into a “thing” once action is applied to it.
Let’s say you have the thought “I really need to lose 10 pounds”. That’s a great thought! Cheers to you for thinking that!
However, that “thought” doesn’t become a “thing” without “action“.
I mean you really think you can lose 10 pounds by just “thinking” it away? It’s definitely part of the process, but unless you DECIDE to change, you probably are just going to wish your life away.
Which will still leave you 10 pounds heavier than you want to be.
Now some decisions may fight you, or seem impossible. Others may tell you it’s impossible.
It’s not whether or not it is impossible that matters.
It’s whether or not you believe it is.
Changing The Impossible
We all have pain and resistance in life.
- Loss of a loved one
- Being wronged by someone you trust
- Getting an illness that is hard to deal with
- Failing in a business
- Being overweight (in my case)
- People who judge you who really have any business doing so
- Being rejected by someone
- {Insert your pain here}
The short of the long is, we have all experienced pain. Some things that you feel you can’t change.
I beg to differ with that feeling.
If you can’t change it, change how you react to it.
I met a gentleman a few years ago who was diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer.
He came to visit me a lot during his illness. His attitude surprised me.
“Eric”, he said, “you know if everything in this life was about me, I would give up and let the cancer take me. But as long as I am physically able, I will live my life for my wife. I’m going to chase her around the house for as long as I possibly can”.
I thought to myself, “What an amazing way to respond after being dealt such a hand in life”.
Little did I expect that a man facing death would teach me how to live.
He remained with that “strong” for a few years until his body finally gave in.
He suffered for 2 long years with treatments, needles, surgery and pills.
He never changed his reaction to the cancer.
Which in turn made the last years of his life, according to him, amazing.
The Wrap
One, you have to decide you want to change whatever it is in your life you feel compelled to change.
Two, you have to react to situations according to your decisions.
Don’t let the setbacks set you back…
