Natural Running

Ok, so I’ve been morbidly curious about “Natural Running” and “Minimalist Running” concepts.

This is mostly due to fact that I think the little hobbit feet shoes look cool.  Also, I was mildly curious about these sporty looking shoes from Newton Running.

Ok.  I’m simple.  I’m attracted to the odd and unique.

So, I bought a pair.

Thanks to the wonderful gift card from my wife, by the way.

I buy the shoes.  I spend an evening surfing Newton’s website and their instructional YouTube videos and decide I am ready to try these out.

Now, what I meant to say is that like any normal man, studying means glancing quickly and obtaining a high level awareness of the shoe but ignoring the details.

But back to that in a moment…

Day 1:

I lace up these new shoes and I practice teetering on the forward part of my foot, learning what it means to reduce impact on the heel and leveraging myself forward using the “land, lever, lift” method.

Oddly enough, it really worked!

I paced some really good time on my 5 mile run and had little foot or leg pain to follow!

Impressed…

Day 2:

I launch out for a six mile run and I didn’t have quite the pace that I did on day 1, but the soreness was marginal at best.

I think I’m sold.

Day 3:

Off day!

Day 4:

Time for a faster run for 5 miles.

This time I notice something I’ve never noticed before.  I have a muscle in the back of my right calf .  And crap, it hurts!

But I finish the 5 miles but had to slow down to get the distance.

Not so good. Just a break in period I guess.

Day 5:

Another off day!

Day 6:

Long run day!

Eight miles!

Oh my God, that hurts! I can barely finish the miles I needed. But with sheer determination, I did it anyway.

Now the tops of my feet hurt.

What the hell!?

Day 7:

Back to the website for Newton Running.

A little closer study gives me the following details….

Ten minutes?!?!

No wonder I’m sore…

What a dumb ass.

Please learn from my ignorance.

See you on the streets!
