I’m really proud on my successes in this life.
I am sure that most of you who read along have some great stories to tell too.
Positive life-changing events are something that everyone loves to feel, and to brag about.
Finding something new to challenge yourself is an exciting task.
When you start to believe that you can really do anything you set your mind to, the sky is the limit!
How to “tackle the sky” is a challenge for me.
If you read my daily “bucket” list, it would read something like:
- Write a best-selling novel
- Learn to speak Spanish fluently
- Learn to play the guitar
- Invest and become a multi-millionaire
- Run a half-marathon again
- Become a better people-person
- Become a better manager
- Develop my race management business
- Get more involved in the community
- Blog on a regular basis
- Communicate better
- …and on and on and on.
The problem I have found with that lofty list is it’s size.
I look at that and say “Hell yes, I am going to achieve all of that!“, yet the devil on the other shoulder says “Where in the hell are you going to find the time for all of that?”
Welcome to “Mental Gridlock”.
Do I think that I can accomplish everything I want to do at the same time?
Yep.
I have to compartmentalize these projects and lessen the daily tasks required in order to fulfill them.
Ask yourself the question, “What do I need to accomplish today to move one step closer to my goal?”
Let’s refine the list I have above to make it read like a daily “to-do”:
- Find someone you know who writes for a living and mentor.
- Commit to 30 minutes of Rosetta Stone for Spanish.
- Find a guitarist and start asking questions.
- Study market publications and look for some wise investments.
- Go for a run today (follow your training plan).
- Go to lunch with someone you haven’t gone to lunch with before.
- Read 30 minutes of a book on leadership.
- Record a YouTube video for your running project.
- Join “Toastmasters”
- Record 15 minutes of writing for your blog.
Now I’ve taken multiple steps today to achieve something small in every category. I invested probably less than a couple of hours and had tremendous impact on getting these goals off the ground.
Now, am I “Eric Clapton” yet? Not exactly…
But I have done something that has left me feeling accomplished today.
And I will take more steps tomorrow.
A final thought.
I found something simple contained in the lyrics of the song “I’ll Follow You” by Shinedown.
“The first step is the one you believe in. The second one might be profound.”
One step at a time, my friend. One step at a time.
